Chipotle's E.coli Nightmare - How to avoid getting sick at your favorite restaurant

We pack the kids up and take them out for a meal and the next thing we know, they’re clutching their stomachs, huddled over and screaming from the pain. Hospitalizations, even death can occur. It’s a scary thought but a reality: whenever we eat, we take the risk that we might get sick from something – undercooked chicken, cross contamination or unwashed produce, just to name a few.

This week, Chipotle – the ‘healthy’ Mexican fast food giant with a squeaky clean reputation for fresh, non-gmo ingredients – is now under the microscope for over 3 dozen confirmed cases of E.coli contamination purportedly from tainted produce from their distributor. Now, after closing 43 of their restaurants in the Pacific Northwest, the lawsuits are starting to trickle in.

The question is, where does the onus lie, and how do you avoid getting sick?

We all know by now that water alone doesn’t clean your produce properly. It’s been validated by countless third party lab studies we’ve initiated. So, if it was the produce and it’s not being washed the right way consistently, these types of outbreaks will continue to occur. That’s why we created Eat Cleaner Fruit + Vegetable Wash and Wipes – so you can take that step at home. For restaurants and food service, we have our industrial version of the wash in a liquid with more exciting innovations to come.

On a final note, I really hope Chipotle rebounds from this. They are doing good things out there. We just need to make washing produce the RIGHT way a consistent process. Voice your opinion and let your favorite restaurant know. And of course, take matters into your own hands and EAT CLEANER, everyday.
